Blogging from 39,000 feet, just because I can

So here I am - comfortably ensconced in seat 15A on an Alaska Air flight from Seattle to Dallas, on my way to a photo shoot. For the first time, I succumbed to the lure of in-flight wifi, mostly because the middle seat is empty and there's actually a bit of room — even though I'm writing a blog post that's soon to be very public, it bothers me to no end to have someone reading over my shoulder.

©Francis Zera / zeraphoto.com The photo is from shortly after takeoff, over Mount Rainier, but right now we're somewhere over Oklahoma, I think. The straight-as-an-arrow roads and farm-field boundaries looking like a printed-circuit board or something transplanted from the Plains of Nazca. I always hope that an oil-stained airplane wing is simply a bit of cosmetic indifference and not a sign of broader neglect.

Packing and traveling across the country with a full lighting kit is never a simple prospect - I'll post photos of the packed gear once I get to the hotel in Dallas, as I forgot to document things as I was packing. I brought three of everything - three Profoto monolights, stands, softboxes, speed rings, umbrellas, Pocket Wizards and cables; two tripods and a few spare pieces-n-parts, all of which are, hopefully, chilling under my feet in the cargo hold, snug in their well-padded Pelican and Lighware cases. There's also a separate bag for clothes down there, too. The cameras, lenses, laptop, iPad, hard drives, etc., are in my carry-ons. All told, I'm dragging along five bags filled with about 120 lbs. of stuff; a set of parents with a couple of kids in tow nagivated the check-in counter far more gracefully than I did at 5:30 this morning.

I'm supposed to be working on a bid, but instead keep staring out the window at the magnificent view and feeling guilty about it so I'm writing about it in an attempt to feel more productive. Sometimes, I think, it's OK to just stare out the window and enjoy where you are. I'll get that bid finished and submitted well before it's due, not to worry.
